Dimension dependent energy thresholds for discrete breathers

چکیده

Discrete breathers are time-periodic, spatially localized solutions of the equations of motion for a system of classical degrees of freedom interacting on a lattice. We study the existence of energy thresholds for discrete breathers, i.e., the question whether, in a certain system, discrete breathers of arbitrarily low energy exist, or a threshold has to be overcome in order to excite a discrete breather. Breather energies are found to have a positive lower bound if the lattice dimension d is greater than or equal to a certain critical value dc, whereas no energy threshold is observed for d < dc. The critical dimension dc is system dependent and can be computed explicitly, taking on values between zero and infinity. Three classes of Hamiltonian systems are distinguished, being characterized by different mechanisms effecting the existence (or non-existence) of an energy threshold. Discrete breathers are time-periodic, spatially localized solutions of equations of motion for classical degrees of freedom interacting on a lattice. They come in one-parameter families. We report on studies of energy properties of breather families in one-, twoand three-dimensional lattices. We show that breather energies have a positive lower bound if the lattice dimension of a given nonlinea...

Energy thresholds for discrete breathers.

Discrete breathers are time-periodic, spatially localized solutions of the equations of motion for a system of classical degrees of freedom interacting on a lattice. An important issue, not only from a theoretical point of view but also for their experimental detection, is their energy properties. We considerably enlarge the scenario of possible energy properties presented by Flach, Kladko, and...

Discrete Breathers - Recent Results and Applications

Nontopological spatially localized time periodic excitations coined discrete breathers are generic solutions for lattice Hamiltonians. Discrete breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices.

We study the properties of spatially localized and time-periodic excitations--discrete breathers--in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chains. We provide a detailed analysis of their spatial profiles and stability properties. We especially demonstrate that the Page mode is linearly stable for symmetric FPU potentials. A resonant interaction between a localized and delocalized perturbations causes weak but...

Discrete breathers in nonlinear Schrödinger hypercubic lattices with arbitrary power nonlinearity

We study two specific features of onsite breathers in Nonlinear Schrödinger systems on d-dimensional cubic lattices with arbitrary power nonlinearity (i.e., arbitrary nonlinear exponent, n): their wavefunctions and energies close to the anti-continuum limit – small hopping limit – and their excitation thresholds. Exact results are systematically compared to the predictions of the so-called expo...
